Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to feel better?
Typically, therapy takes some time. Chances are, the events contributing to the reasons you are coming to therapy took a long time, so it could take a while to work through those things. It also can depend on your commitment to the therapeutic process (including work outside the therapy session) and the reasons you have sought out therapy.
I’ve never been to therapy. What is therapy like?
Best Life Counseling takes an individual approach when it comes to therapy sessions. The therapist will collaborate with you to develop an individualized treatment plan that is specific to your goals and needs. Everything will be tailored to you!
When you first meet with your therapist, the therapist will complete an assessment with you to gather a history as well as current things you are struggling with. You and your therapist will set goals together and determine how often you will meet with the therapist.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication can be effective, but it alone cannot solve all issues. Research shows that the most effective treatment combination is medication coupled with counseling. Please note LCSWs are unable to prescribe or manage medication. Best Life Counseling will happily, however, explore the pros and cons of medication and work with you to determine if medication is the best option for you.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
Best Life Counseling believes that therapy is a very active process. You can think of a therapist like a teacher. We can provide you information, give you the tools, strategies, and the support you’ll need to achieve your goals, but at the end of the day, it really is up to you to choose to practice them in your daily life. Change is most often seen in the day-to-day incorporation of therapeutic practices with the people and events you encounter outside of the session. Your attendance and frequency of sessions will also impact the effectiveness of your therapy. You and your therapist will set your schedule. Together, you’ll work to find a solution that works for you so you can start living your Best Life.
Is what we talk about confidential?
Confidentiality is one of the most important parts of the therapeutic relationship. Best Life Counseling will provide you with a copy of the confidentiality agreement, which will inform you that you can expect that what you discuss in therapy will not be shared with anyone unless you specifically give your therapist permission to do so.
Your therapist does have state laws and professional ethics that must be followed. In these cases, the therapist will be required to share about suspected abuse or neglect of children, adults, and elders with CPS/APS or law enforcement as well as if there is a reason to suspect you are in serious danger of hurting yourself or others.
Will I get to speak with my therapist before the first session?
Yes! Best Life Counseling offers a free 15-minute consultation with your therapist in which you can share your reasons for seeking therapy and make sure you and your therapist are a good fit.
